We are a Non-Profit Community Orchestra

Spectrum Orchestra is a community orchestra serving the greater Detroit Metro area. The group is composed of adult musicians who are interested in preparing and performing quality orchestral music.

Our goal is to have fun together, learn, and present quality performances in an open and supportive environment.

Spectrum Orchestra was officially founded just 10 days before our first rehearsal in September 2012. Our orchestra first took to the stage in on November 30th, 2012, opening with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture led by our first Music Director, Daniel Brier.

Spectrum Orchestra officially received non-profit status.

Music Director Daniel Brier earned his second Master’s Degree in orchestra conducting from the University of Michigan – in addition to his previous Masters in choral conducting.

By the end of the year, Music Director Daniel Brier was appointed the assistant conductor of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Daniel’s new appointment included conducting KSO Family Discovery Concerts, Youth Concerts, Pops Concerts as needed, and participation in community outreach and educational programs of the KSO.

Daniel announced his departure from Spectrum Orchestra.

Kevin Fitzgerald, a resident of Brighton, a graduate student at the University of Michigan as well as an accomplished trumpet player, was selected to be the new Music Director of Spectrum Orchestra.

Spectrum Orchestra appointed its first assistant conductor, Diego Piedra. Diego, an accomplished conductor and violinist, was appointed to lead rehearsals in Kevin’s absence as he traveled to conduct other orchestras.

Lynne Gillespie became the next president of Spectrum Orchestra.

Cellist Jeremy Crosmer from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra made his debut performance as a guest soloist with Spectrum Orchestra, performing the Dvořák Cello Concert with the orchestra. He has since returned for three additional programs in subsequent years.

Diego Piedra was appointed Music Director of Spectrum Orchestra after having rehearsed the orchestra as Assistant Conductor since 2017.

Music Director Diego Piedra departed Spectrum Orchestra to be Assistant Professor and Conductor at Valparaiso University.

Our 3/13/2020 performance was cancelled due to Covid-19 concerns. This was followed by a year of “Zoom rehearsals”, which kept the orchestra members connected and engaged. A brief calm before the Covid Delta storm of November-December 2021 allowed us to perform Spectrum’s first outdoor concert on Oct 1, 2021. But then the Omicron Covid wave of January 2022 resulted in the cancellation of our 1/21/22 concert.

In 2021 Rotem Weinberg was appointed Music Director of Spectrum Orchestra. In October 2021, the orchestra performed an outdoor concert at Wildwood Amphitheatre in Lake Orion, MI.

In 2022, Zirka Kalynych, became the next President of Spectrum Orchestra.

Eszter Horváth was appointed Music Director/Conductor.
